From Ian Cheng’s book Emissaries Guide to Worlding. Very intriguing art book that I haven’t yet figured out how to read.

I got this via at the Serpentine marathon last year. Just cracking it open since I’m getting interested in world building. Yo is this supposed to be read in a particular way? (Also, thanks for my copy 🙂)

I remembered I had this book after this tweet soliciting portal examples blew up. Ian probably has a theory of portals in the book. I will look.

What physical embodiments of portals between worlds have been imagined in sci-fi/fantasy? My starter list:
Rabbit hole (Alice)
Subtle knife (dark materials)
Wardrobe (Narnia)
Phone booth (Doctor Who)
Platform 9 3/4 (Potter)
Wormhole with gate (Stargate)

Looking at the axes I put exploratory sci-fi in the top right. Put characters in a world and see what happens

just flip around, it has a linear structure but lots of sketches/charts/images collaged together - i found it fascinating to see so much pre-production and theory behind his work which i had guessed was more random and intuitive

I do not understand what this book is about, but I just ordered it because I am fascinated by what I’m imagining it’s about.
