Agree. I don't think humans *can* understand novel complex systems top-down. You pretty much have to start bottom-up and get enough context and familiarity before you can start making connections and analogies and noticing patterns: all of the stuff that principles are made of.

Seems mostly true. Exception may be when you have a strong competence in one skill/area and wish to learn adjacent or parallel skills.

To learn something brain has to be engaged otherwise there is nothing to hold on to ... Learn in context so that is understandable and relatable, abstract would not work to learn something new. Preferably using all senses: touch-hear-see-smell-feel ... Best way to learn
