Weird medium-is-message effect: I can only take money as seriously as the work I do to earn it. This means if I want to be more serious with spending/saving/investment, I have to earn it in more serious ways. Anybody else experience this?
what's that distinction in your mind? is investment returns receiving or earning?

it's a reversal thing. The value of effort is quantified by money, but value of money is also quantified by the effort that goes into acquiring it.

so yes, an investment reaping benefits seems like a calculated gift for the self, as opposed to actual compensation for labor (of love or otherwise).
