Lesson of the week: If you ever cone across a niche blog, article, or book that's really interesting or useful, email the author! It might be the first time they've heard from a reader

Every time I do this I think "they probably won't respond...".
I did this 2x this week and—LIKE ALWAYS—both responded and were thrilled to hear their work was useful.
Wonder how many times I have to do this before I internalize that the vast majority respond with enthusiasm...

I've done this 20+ times in the last year and every time received a friendly response. Really don't understand why my brain still expects rejection...

Umm, you're young and female. Might get a very different response pattern if you were old and male for eg.

Used to reply to everybody with a "thanks for reading", now I only respond if they say something interesting. Usually don't respond to anyone who seems disturbed (a group that has slowly seen an uptick over the years)

I thought this explained it too, but then I asked a few other friends who also do this who don't fit in those categories and they've come across the same results.
Plus, these demographic facts are not obvious from my name nor email address.

Another (maybe) useful data point: I respond to everyone who emails me with something thoughtful, generally w/o seeking further info about their identity (unless maybe if I'm about to respond with something controversial). Not sure if this is typical, but it's an existence proof.
