It’s a chance to do a history experiment! But since there’s only one trial and you only get a year of results, that rules out “butterfly effect”-type interventions, so it would have to be a big one at the start of the experimental year.

You mean like assassinate despised leader? That’s actually a good conceptual idea. But the setup doesn’t mean it’s easier to pull off, so chances are you just get a year in jail.

I think this bodes well for humanity. The do-over might remove your punishment but it won’t remove your guilt or memories if your choice was be evil, leave wife and kids, that sort of thing. And if you aren’t evil you mostly don’t need a do-over.

The other option is something that needs a few (very dangerous) attempts to get right. But you only have ONE chance extra. Doesn’t materially change the learning/reward trade off.
