Twitter has a very frontier feel to it as a place to experiment with content, but it's more a frontier-themed theme park than an actual frontier due to a) private ownership b) no real "roughing it" barrier to entry. More Buffalo Bill than Wild Bill Hickock.

I think frontier/civilization is orthogonal to public private. The frontier is a locus where the private/public distinction doesn't really exist. Everybody is homesteading in an anarchic space.
