Anyone technically competent enough to run a true self-hosted Wordpress blog without help today is too technical to be interested in writing as a primary creative outlet. They're hackers first.

The complexity of that is starting to come down I think, to the point where it will be comparable to where Wordpress was in 2007 or so very soon.

I'm not sure I necessarily believe that in a world where basically every hosting provider has one-click WP deployment options.
If you're willing to use existing themes and not completely re-jig the whole code of the site, I feel like any creative writer could follow the steps

Agree to disagree. WP is highly accessible with mid-level tech skills. Many/most bloggers I know can set one up easily enough.
