I might in general be ready to go back to the suburbs after 7 years in the urban core. Is suburbia still a thing? Or is it a devastated post-apocalyptic landscape of deserted malls and big box stores with zombies?

Find the old suburbs. After warehouse living and deep urban diving for over 10 years I landed in the burbs and not being surrounded by four lanes of traffic and the ghost of Robert Moses is really nice. 20 min drive to downtown. Your sentiment is legit.

Have you thought about towns near urban cores? By “town”, I mean a location that developed independently of the city, and so is fulfilling without having to reference the city. Example: Santa Rosa vs. San Francisco.

I miss NYC, but Peekskill, NY has taken good care of me — a suburban “city” (23.5K) within inconvenient commuting distance from the megapolis. Got its own culture and politics and networked spaces and accessibility.
