I’m 100% sure nobody has had that intention in announcing their intention to unfollow me. It’s mostly an attempt to punish for what they consider a bad tweet afaict which puzzles me since nobody is paying anyone

Usually just a word, “unfollowed” in response to a specific tweet. Sometimes with a short, entirely unhelpful “cause”. Scare quotes since the stated cause is never the one I infer.

actually come to think of it, I think it's rooted in a fundamental belief that their attention is somehow really precious and sacred and we must all be craving it, and bemoaning its loss. see also:
