Why do we still use “view from the trenches” as a metaphor for practical wisdom? That was grim, deeply futile, attrition warfare. How about “view from the tank turret” instead?

The best tank battles were won or lost already in the map room. So the view from the turret is good for sorting out a skirmish not for winning the battle.

You’re missing the point. This is not difference between theory vs practice but between 2 practice situations. One with somewhat more agency than the other.

I get that - should have clarified that the view from trenches is the practice v theory situation while I see tank turret as tactic v strategy
