Mediocrity is why exceptional technicians are often bad at the game of pickaxes. They make overpowered tools that extend their already exceptional skills. Instead of pickaxes that turn average into exceptional.

Yeah, there’s the pg “Beating the Averages” essay on BLUB programmer but “The Lisp Curse” is closer to what you’re saying. “Worse Is Better” is also definitely worth a look.
