While I'm against beef-only thinking in general, I think teaching works better if it is highly opinionated (same as tech products). Like, a strong Bayesian or a strong Frequentist would both make better teachers than someone with no opinion. The fervor helps teach better I think.
No he sucks as a teacher at least in his books. They’re just polemics. You wouldn’t teach stats 101 with his books.

I can’t say the same about his other books but when I was 18 “fooled by randomness” definitely taught me some very basic mental models that I still use. I was in arts so maybe the ROI was much higher?

Possibly lower since the risk of getting basic concepts wrong is higher I prefer Costa Shalizi’s approach to pop-stats writing for that reason. He debunks more than he...bunks.
