I'm a fairly experienced teacher (8 semesters at college level, couple of online things) but only rarely have been motivated/engaged enough in the process to be more than mediocre at it. I generally need a stronger motive than simply being invested in students' learning/growing.

That's a consequentialist take. Mine is more simply deontological: it simply doesn't inspire me enough. I don't care about outcomes/risks as much. I just like doing whatever I do with a decent degree of interest/engagement. I don't like simply going through the motions.
I taught Math and Logical Reasoning to MBA aspirants. It's pretty uninspiring work.
