This seems like an important insight... "overproduction" I think is one of my own red flags. Though the set-point for "right" level of production depends on the content itself.

A lot of podcasts are overproduced because people think that will make it. The best podcasts are self-selecting, don’t wear their production value on their sleeve, have a strong voice and are niche (a lot like Ribbonfarm).

I wager every increase in production value needs a similar increase in voice, niche and differentiation otherwise it falls flat and you get 'radio'. Alternately you have something like Chapo which is ridiculously produced but you wouldn't say from listening to it casually.
