Isn’t there a system of government based on random people being put in office? I vaguely recall seeing a Greek word for that. I actually like that idea beyond a certain point of complexity, which we may be nearing. In higher dimensions randomized algorithms do better.https://twitter.com/swardley/status/1083984818571042816 …

... though I'm hugely in favour of democracy, I do wonder whether we should just temporarily suspend it and replace political houses and senior executives with random selection from the electoral register. Something is going terribly wrong in our selection processes.

sortition is the usual word, though some people use "lottocracy." Here's a good presentation and defense: https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=2488791 …

I was super for that until I was on a grand jury. Random people are easily played because they lack experience. That jury voted however the prosecutor wanted. I'm passively interested in ways to put more power in expert hands. E.g. elect many specialist reps vs 1 general rep.

I've been looking at sortition recently for medical coop governance. It's a much better alignment of incentives between office holders and public. Career based on popularity, maintaining incumbent advantages leads to corruption leads to oligarchy. Republic = oligarchy well known.
