Poll: Millennials and experiences vs things (ht @chenoehart for inspiration). In choices below, M=millennial (b >=1980), E=experiences, T= things.

M, but mostly prefer money to keep my options open, voted E. But, if "things" include "income-producing assets" then that.

I reckon it’s experiences over things, irrespective of generation. We generally have enough “stuff”, and have varying degrees of environmental sensitivity (assuming less stuff, less environmental degradation).

Ppl are becoming more mindful and aware of their existence, and thus the intangible has become premium. Examples include instagramable content is more about an experience or a feeling than it is about things. If it is about a thing, it’s about how having that thing makes you feel

It's funny that to me (and, I expect, most others my age), "acquiring things" has connotations of vice, while "having experiences" sounds virtuous.

It's almost hard to believe that these connotations have evolved, but they clearly have, and I expect they will again. The baby boomers seem shallow to us for their focus on acquiring possessions, and I imagine that we will seem selfish for our focus on having grand experiences.

Too tricky to answer. I probably only prefer experiences <at this point in my life> because I've already collected all the "things" I need to live comfortably.

E vs T preference changes over time and situation. I used to consider vacations a waste because for that money I could buy a TV or something. Now not only do I prefer the opposite, I want to trade all my possessions for experiences. Our belongings eventually come to own us.
