What’s a tweet that would get certain people to unfollow you that you’d actually be okay standing behind? You should probably tweet it. Not to cultivate a perverse repulsiveness for its own sake, but to help people correctly flip bozobit on you by their standards.

I was responding to the claim that we set the bar too high for a PhD thesis and people are stuck trying to reach that bar. The bar is not high. It is easy to get a PhD if you just do the work. Compared with creating a product or service people want to buy... it is a joke.

You might be conflating difficulty of work with difficulty of getting published results which vary ridiculously across fields. In CS, iirc, papers at good conferences are hard to get out and count towards PhD.

To Brian’s point, perhaps the answer is an intermediate degree like the M. Phil which allows a graceful exit on a deterministic timeline. Some burnouts use ABD as almost a degree credential, which is sad. Give them a real one for time spent.

I’ll add myself as a data-point. I both enjoyed and finished mine in a timely manner. I didn’t make any notable contributions, just obscure footnote level, but I got a nice confidence boost from it. I earned my credential, but didn’t win or deserve any prizes for notability.
