Max Tegmark divides life into three phases:
1.0 — fixed hardware, fixed software (bacteria)
2.0 — fixed hardware, self-editing software (humans)
3.0 — self-editing hardware, self-editing software (#AI)

I really like this framing, because it's counter-intuitive with respect to AI. We mostly think of AI as a software project, but the real story is the transition to "substrate-independent intelligence". If mind can be instantiated in silicon, it can be instantiated anywhere.

It's in chapter 2 of his book. He's talked about it a lot of places, but I don't have any other go-to source.
