The rare fields in which raising standards increases productivity are compounding machines.

I start to feel anxious when I think of how low I could lower my standards. Part of it might be a terror of the degrees of freedom. With enough constraints there is a 'right' answer. Without there are infinite ways to be mediocre, done, and on to the next thing.

If that works, it means your standards were unnecessarily high. If not, your work product will get rejected.
When I made my living as a writer, things really took off when I changed my goal from acceptances to acceptances+rejections
