Is there something like “false mediocrity” ? (equivalent to false modesty). And what would you reply to the objection that mediocrity is a luxury only the non-mediocre (or the too mediocre to be aware) can afford?

I’d say look around at actual humans. Take the next 10 people you meet and ask how many are striving for excellence in anything vs slacking through on bare minimum effort and settling for lesser rewards.

Self-aware, self-accepting mediocrity may be rare but mediocrity itself isn’t. And self-awareness doesn’t falsify it.

I would argue that when it happens to be self-aware the subject has a high mediocrity bar. His/her mediocrity might not be perceived as such by others.

Possibly. Most people define mediocrity by quality of output relative to their own estimated best.
I define it more fundamentally relative to slack in effort/not trying to challenge yourself.

Gotta normalize for raw aptitude/experience/quantity of learning. I can do better than a naturally bad writer without exerting myself.
A mediocre slacker local club chess player could beat me at my best.
