i just thought of a thought that I have that is pretty odd trusting scientists is a middlebrow thing to do. really stupid people and really smart people both mistrust scientists (for different reasons in different ways) and it's actually challenging to signal you're the latter

“Seeing Like a State” was so loved by the Cato Institute that Jim Scott had to add a disclaimer to subsequent editions saying “stop saying I’m Hayekian I’m not into Hayek.” If your smart critique is embraced by the stupid (or vice versa) does your signal intent matter?
