Convolution is a bizarre mathematical operation. I never really got the intuitive hang of it despite using it a fair amount. I hate when I’m reduced to formula-monkey.

is this visualization of convolution helpful for building intuition? too image-pixel domain specific? commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:3D_C

I think of a convolution as weighted multiplication. In fact when you do 23 x 16, that's convolution right there! 2 weighted 10 times more than 3 in 23 & 1 weighted 10 times more than 6 in 16. These weights can be anything, including spatial positions, hence image convolution.

The true test of understanding any concept is if you can make predictions based on the understanding. Since I haven't made any predictions that can be tested to see if they hold true, technically I still haven't "understood" convolution😜
