Try not moving or opening eyes. I once heard that as soon as your nervous system has new data, you lose it. Remember everything you can before you move, then write it down.

Iirc correctly, dreams are confabulatory short-term memories that evolve to be consistent kinda backwards. That's why alarm-clock-wake-up dreams often have a logical narrative to them: the narrative is invented after the stimulus starts, in short-term memory.
