Alternate headline: Coastal Californian housing costs are displacing people to areas that will most definitely, certainly burn down to the ground.

As San Francisco’s young creatives and rising tech stars start to seek better work/life balance, not to mention better real estate prices, the Sierra Nevada mountain towns just three hours east suddenly have a renewed appeal. vogue.cm/Aci60lg

Don’t they know this? Do they just accept the risk? Or do they cynically free-ride on expectation of freebie government fire protection/damages insurance? I imagine home insurance rates are distorted by expectation of subsidized protection?

Hmm... but presumably local fire protection is not entirely paid for with local taxes, so some socialization of costs must be at work? Either way, that’s some seriously perverse risk-taking.

Insurance socializes costs, but fires are so different now compared to even a few years ago that I don’t think modern fire behavior is priced in. 1991 Oakland tunnel fire was 1 house per 11-13 seconds. 2018 #campfire grew a football field a second.
