The progress of modernity, and modern progressivism, which I had assumed was moving forward with regular progress -- are recent political & social events just a fluctuation, or are they a repudiation. In simpler terms, are humans capable of belonging to very large tribes?

No, they are not, without significant augmentation to their sense-making and meaning-making facilities. Bare individuals, absent a social matrix, are generally unable to handle to the full writhing mess of all that's going on. TLDR: Yes, but only when organized into societies.
