We comfortable chatterati live in a intellectual milieu of joyless countergrievance axe-grinding, laboring under a facade of casual inquiry. I can’t recall the last time I encountered somebody thinking an imaginative, discourse-expanding thought on a difficult, risky topic.

Original thought outside the Overton Window is promptly pitchfork-mobbed into oblivion. Not a failure, but a result of the math of social media currency: moar outrage-inducing content --> moar “engagement” --> moar likes, followers, scalps, knee-bends, and ring-kisses

The self-styled “taboo busting” types who ignore the Overton window and are cheered on by the alt-Overton-window crowd have been even more unimaginative. It’s not the pitchforks. That’s just a convenient excuse.

I'd bet that in 10-20 years there will retrospectively turn out to be quite a few imaginative people working on difficult topics right now, just not in the public limelight. Rather: thoughtful, diligent, and currently offstage.
