Can technological and scientific progress continue forever, or could it stop in future?
-
Forever is a very long time. Over the sufficiently long term it is almost 100% certain to stop. There are vastly more ways it could stop than continue.

I recommend reading Richard Hamming's talk "You and your research", especially the part where he talks about courage, and applying to whatever you do (generalizes well). http://www.cs.virginia.edu/~robins/YouAndYourResearch.html …

How can I convince myself that anything matters enough to take it seriously?
-
Saw this late since twitter hid it. Taking things seriously/believing it matters is motivating for a minority but actually demotivating for a majority. You’re at your best with things when they matter just enough for your motivation pattern, but not too much. Find those things.

If you’re getting to the age and/or career point where you really ought to be a key and you aren’t one, is there anything you can do about it short of blowing up your life?
-
It means you're not taking enough risks. Continuing doing what you do well, but look for ways to increase risks in every decision. "Blowing up your life" is right direction, wrong intensity. Focused, quiet, hidden risk-taking, not dramatic gestures.

I've stumbled into being de facto product manager (from Senior SWE) since nobody else was filling the role. Should I formalize the title?
-
Yes if you can do it without ruining any important relationships. Formal resume stuffing matters and there's no real downside to it. If it might ruin some relationships, you might question why you have those relationships.
