I think it started before front-facing camera lenses were a thing.

Because the feedback was immediate. Because it's much easier than to set up a phone with the camera framing where they want to be standing, then set a timer?

a Quora poster says "Some of the very first selfies were shot in mirrors with back cameras, because the front camera was no good, or the phone didn’t have a front camera at all. This still goes on, to show off the device that the shooter is using, or just to get a wider image."

Selfies ARE mirror images with a log. You look at yourself, you think it looks good, you register it. It’s pretty simple.

Where else do you think people would get the idea to record their own face? It’s a digital mirror.
