A big mistake institutionalist romantics make is thinking tech *caused* the ongoing collapse of institutions. No. The evidence is clear. They've been collapsing steadily since 1974. Tech merely created channels for the anger to flow. The dam burst elsewhere.

That's ridiculous. The evidence is clear that the comment section morphing into the platforms mainstreamed hate speech everywhere and that collapsed civil society. It's the only way you get India to Brazil to US to Hungary to Brexit all at the same time.

It's got to take some serious over thinking to not come to the conclusion that platforms and hate speech not being the problem or a connection to SV and talking your book.

Imagine you're in late 2006, and you're told that a global recession as large as the Great Depression is coming. Also there will be iPhones and FB/Twitter. Which of these factors are more likely to drive political outcomes 12 years later?

I think Occam's razor points us fairly decisively towards the global recession, and that blaming the communications technology is the extraordinary claim that requires extraordinary evidence.
