It's always shocked me just how incredibly paternalistic & "socialistic" Norman Rockwell era America really was. You had a job more or less for life thanks to govt incentives that built factories everywhere. You had access to healthcare. Choice was really low. Imports were few.

A huge aspect of all this was the creation of a "noble, free, capitalist worker" myth. It's right there in magazines from the 50s. The massive role of the govt in crafting the system was always elided over. The fish weren't even aware of the fishbowl or its owner.
