Just had an epiphany thanks to a comment of on another thread. The sense of being "forgotten" by a grand narrative is actually a sense of being remembered culturally, but being forgotten institutionally.

I still believe you need to take seriously the notion that this is oppression. Being remembered culturally but being unable to access institutional resources is de facto cultural appropriation. It is exploitation.

Yes, agreed on 'class war'. If they're getting a similarly bad deal to a whole host of other people it definitely doesn't follow that this means everything is okay.

it seems like the issue is that they misinterpret the bad deal that they’re getting (they think they’re losing bc of the “others”, not /with/ them)
