Been reading a bunch of Terry Pratchett lately and it struck me that GHWB was a bit like Vetinari, a pragmatic patrician steward type in between monarchist presidents. Not as shrewd/effective as Vetinari, but a guy whose great achievement was preserving boring-normal in chaos

Ie the impressive thing about him was there was no cult of presidency around him. It was almost like he continued to be Vice President 1998-02, in a good sense.

Hard to imagine a cult of presidency around a 1-term president (JFK excluded for obvious reasons).
