The reward for living through a major loss-of-innocence period of history while coming of age is that you develop a certain capacity for healthy sentimentality. You can appreciate emotional tenor of past without romanticizing it, because you know viscerally why it had to end.

9/11 was not a global big deal the way collapse of USSR was, and neither was the recession (for which you’d have been too old anyway) A sense of “whole world changing together” feels different from localized historic developments and has a more profound generational effect imo
