Things I read before the internet are not all connected up in my head. They’re more like separate disconnected universes. It’s like I have public cloud/private cloud head. Things you read with google at fingertips get compiled to long-term memory with a lot more bundled context.

I do often wonder though, what a difference it would have made to have been able to access the world online back in those formative, curious years. Would have made a huge, positive difference, I tend to think at first. 1/2

But then I look at the kids today and realise that the effect of everyone having that exerts a conformatist centrifugal force away from true exploration, towards a peer-induced pursuit of endless wastes of time, e.g. facebook, insta, etc. Who knows how one would have faired...2/2

My wife and I are members of the Oregon Trail generation (i.e. old millennials). Our childhood was pure 20th century. But adolescence onward is 21st.
