It isn't just Trump... I think in general people think more advanced tech is necessarily more complex. Don't know about catapults, but in general this is not true. EVs are simpler than IC-engine cars. Semiconductor electronics is simpler than vacuum tube electronics.

The "digital" aside (what does he think that means?) I don't get why he feels like he needs an opinion here. It's a technical question, it doesn't trigger the libs... does he think the steam comes from burning coal or something?

Without knowing any more details, my top-of-the-head guess would be that EM is likely to be much safer. Any time you're dealing with high-pressure steam you're dealing with risks of explosions and leaks and things. Plus you need a whole steam system.

There's another reason they want to move to EM tho, and that's that the steam systems don't have the granularity to launch lighter stuff (You could probably design a new steam system that has the capacity range tho...)

my take goes whatever happens for the Ford class is another thing but cat #4 on the Nimitzes should just be retrofitted with EM instead. then they can worry about getting the Ford system right. Maybe 1 system that can rule them all isn't the right path, idk

fortunately a DDG was my home away from home. Aegis BMD stuff in DESRON 15 — RF optimization & AWS integration on tech side, BMD+C7F combined TACOPS on the operational side, where my big thing was to take system CAPS/LIMS and extract max performance for any posture/MATCON/etc etc
