This is such a weird, animistic/anthropomorphic, projective way to think about technology: "[EM] Doesn’t have the power...the steam is just brutal. You see that sucker going and steam’s going all over the place, there’s planes thrown in the air.” Err. Just turn up the voltage.

I think a demon like conception of tech is common to the older generation. especially the ones who haven't been around pneumatic, hydraulic or electric machines much. You see an almost superstitious fear of elevators among the older people at malls (at least in India).

On second thought, it might just be unfamiliarity. Rural, older people operate tractors and threshers just fine. I have an almost superstitious feat of kitchen appliances.
