It isn't just Trump... I think in general people think more advanced tech is necessarily more complex. Don't know about catapults, but in general this is not true. EVs are simpler than IC-engine cars. Semiconductor electronics is simpler than vacuum tube electronics.https://twitter.com/vgr/status/1065708141373882368 …

The "digital" aside (what does he think that means?) I don't get why he feels like he needs an opinion here. It's a technical question, it doesn't trigger the libs... does he think the steam comes from burning coal or something? pic.twitter.com/b91ZDWh1jZ

Without knowing any more details, my top-of-the-head guess would be that EM is likely to be much safer. Any time you're dealing with high-pressure steam you're dealing with risks of explosions and leaks and things. Plus you need a whole steam system.

So what the plan for dealing with fully-loaded F/A 18s? Add more juice to the EM system? Self-powered short takeoff?

I hear this argument often. My counterargument is that we've turned physical complexity into digital complexity. How much code goes into making sure lithium batteries don't explode when you charge them? That electric motors don't overtorque and destroy themselves?

I suspect not much actually. What makes the code more complex is that the flexibility allows you to monkey with it, adding more features. Which is fine. After all, steam engines had mechanical governors that could break. Boilers explosions were way more dangerous than battery.

my take goes whatever happens for the Ford class is another thing but cat #4 on the Nimitzes should just be retrofitted with EM instead. then they can worry about getting the Ford system right. Maybe 1 system that can rule them all isn't the right path, idk

There's another reason they want to move to EM tho, and that's that the steam systems don't have the granularity to launch lighter stuff (You could probably design a new steam system that has the capacity range tho...)

Hence the Military Reform Lobby, which routinely spouts out garbage like what Trump did, and has been doing so non stop since Vietnam

If I'm understanding this right, it's the same reasons we don't see production EM rail guns. Prohibitive wear and tear and running cost.
