The only answer for me is "when I try to stop thinking about it but find myself unable to".
If I find that my brain is still trying to work on some problem even when I'm asleep, then there's nothing to do but work until it's solved.

Every now and then my brain makes actual productive progress on some problem while I'm dreaming. If I'm overworked/stressed I just get anxiety dreams.

It’s changed with age for me. When younger I’d just stay up giving the thought trail enough time rope to hang itself. Now I get depressed by the energy drain anticipation and give up.
