What triggers lead you to max-out personal effort or some other resource like money in an activity? When do you go all out and give it everything you’ve got? (Answers citing examples in your past particularly appreciated)

The only answer for me is "when I try to stop thinking about it but find myself unable to". If I find that my brain is still trying to work on some problem even when I'm asleep, then there's nothing to do but work until it's solved.

That's amazing. I have gotten to the exact opposite conclusion. If I can't shut down when I try to sleep it's a sign I'm overworked and I need to cool it.

Every now and then my brain makes actual productive progress on some problem while I'm dreaming. If I'm overworked/stressed I just get anxiety dreams.

It’s changed with age for me. When younger I’d just stay up giving the thought trail enough time rope to hang itself. Now I get depressed by the energy drain anticipation and give up.
