The startup pitching, fundraising, and dealflow circuit is far more specialized than people realize. People sort of generically working/consulting in tech or writing/speaking about tech don’t necessarily know much about it even if they’re reasonably well-connected.

It’s almost a tell when startup founders ask me for help with this that they don’t quite know how the ecosystem works. Not a bad thing necessarily.

Yup - many founders don’t at all realize the need for a “rainmaker” in startup success. Once you are anointed, many strategic resources become available, which is why so many funds look to a few leaders to see which horses will get full backing of the right networks.
