The use of NPC as a slur is either deeply ironic, or deeply prophetic, depending on whether you think gaming in the future is going to be an OS for civilization or continue as a place to park inconsequential humans in a place of relative psychological stability.

Err it's the default way most non-gamers look at it (as in people who might occasionally game for fun, but their lives don't revolve around it)

Semi-frequent gamers aren't the ones whose identities revolve around gaming and spend all their time doing it. Casual gaming is something all of us do. But "gamer" as an identity over "gaming" as a peripheral life activity I think typically describes a societal NPC.

What other activities could define societal NPCs? Or the other way around, what activities define player characters? Is there a clear boundary, or just something we jump over from time to time? Aren't most of us inconsequential? What's different in me from a hardcore gamer?
