Recent experiments with fiction have helped me understand just how good the deceptively simple-seeming storytelling model of Maus is. The decision to map mice to Jews and Nazis to cats solves some really tricky problems (Lion King otoh is a masterclass in bad animal mappings)

Have been meaning to read this. My brother got it for me for Christmas.

Can recommend the series Blacksad for really wonderful animal mappings. They’re more pulpy and fun than the deep thematic metaphors of Maus, but the character/personality match is exceptionally delightful. Also overall one of the most beautiful graphic novel series ever made.

I liked Maus, but...
AFAIK under the Nazi regine, “Jew” became a label that could be arbitrarily tagged on anyone to get rid of them.
Maus’ worldview implicitly defines this out of existence. Which ironically, is kind of totalitarian.
Please no flames for pointing this out
