An engineering habit that dies hard no matter how much you turn into an empty suit type is asking “what are we solving for?” Impulse to distill a problem out of a “situation” and move on to solving phase is driven by belief that debating solutions beat debating suppositions.

Sometimes the discussion about what we’re solving for is very valuable on its own. It doesn’t have to be a “shut this down and move on” question.
