Suppose you did an A/B test of two surface lander design concepts on Mars and both basically worked. Assume they cost the same. How do you break the tie for mission #3?
Make suitable assumptions for an interesting and creative answer.

You create a prediction market for it.
Bonus points for doing it on a blockchain.

Examine other vectors such as repairability, serviceability, modularity, repeatability, etc. it’s the same as software isn’t it?

Whichever gets me back with half of it broken by freak storm that's usually in store for such missions....

Obviously, I'd choose whichever looks cooler. And by 'cooler', I mean whichever one would better fit the aesthetic of Warhammer 40K.

Definitely not: hold an internet poll. That’s how we would end up with Lander McLandface.

Survey the engineers! If it was solely on me: assuming an iterative approach to lander development, look at future needs and forecast how well can each concept be adapted/reused. What does committing to each concept tie us to for capabilities, support & supply chain.

Pick the design that is most evolvable, ie can be modified for a wider range of future missions.
