Bought some new reading glasses at Walgreens for $20 yesterday, now I find out the same ones are available in 3-packs at Costco. How the hell is anything except Amazon, Costco, Walmart, and restaurants surviving?

I'm confident it's because at least one of the assumptions you've made about how the economic survival of businesses works is wrong. I'm not confident I know which one, though.

Increasingly, they are not. Here in SF, despite a booming economy, half of the retail shops are empty on some streets. Within 5 years, the city will be nothing more than craft cocktail bars, artisan coffee shops, Soul Cycle studios, and Amazon Go shops.

I would say that being able to touch the merchandise and just browse is a major advantage. I do order kitchenware online, for instance, but would prefer to buy it in a store if I had something between Target and fancy furniture stores to buy it from.
