This idea of “adoption disequilibrium” is all around us (examples in thread - starbucks, tsa pre, waze). It’s a giant prisoner’s dilemma whereby the more we act in our self-interest, the more harm it does to society.

"Adoption disequlibrium" is a great term for this. Has also happened at Seattle airport between taxis and rideshare. It is now easier/faster to join the taxi line than the rideshare scrum. Err no... that's jumping to a conclusion. It's not "self interest harming society". It's an emergent systemic effect that needs engineering solutions. The alt equilibriums like standing in a queue are exactly as self-interested.
