We often seek to explain/excuse ideologically colored antisocial behavior (incl killing) by referencing a history of mental illness. What is worthy of critical scrutiny/theorizing is why mental illness often *finds* expression in ideologically colored neuroses/psychoses.

People who struggle with emotional regulation are a perfect match for ideologies that thrive and spread by exacerbating people’s emotions. I would also consider that mental illness is lonely and ideology offers a sense of community

It may not just be organized forms of ideology, but also could manifest as behavior like ex. abuse of a particular gender role which went on long before it became so closely associated with deliberate contemporary politics and can still apply in less political settings.
