The most important patriarchal institution is obviously the trad family. What isn’t obvious is that this is also the strongest. Unlike others, there is no market of substitutes or an impersonal state-based alt. Exit/voice is very weak. You cannot change families like jobs.

one aspect of the Nordic model is that many of the traditional (support/insurance) functions of family are taken on by the state, and nuclear family hegemony seems duly reduced. this may be desirable or not, but to the degree one sees the nuclear family as a fount of paternalism

(and paternalism as undesirable), replacing familial interdependence with dependence on universal benefits seems like a good way out. (Indeed, this is why many social conservatives, who consider nuclear family hegemony — if not "patriarchy" itself — a good thing, fear the model.)
