Are there any examples of mainstream successful hybrid prose-and-comix format things? I mean blocks of text and dialogue interspersed with more visual action panels... but sequential, not illustrated prose like picture books. Feels like that would be highly efficient/compact.

Very far from mainstream, but I am considering both that and a computer visual novel format for the sequels to the graphic novel pilot I did a few years ago.

Matt Wagner did this with his “Devil’s Reign” and “Devil by the Deed” story arcs in his Grendel comic book published by Comico. They were both collected in tpb. Certainly successful by comicbook standards.

Maus by Art Speigelman is more graphics less text but a must see for your comic research
Far far from mainstream but maybe my @EelmanChronicle comic may give some ideas?
