New #DoctorWho is not subtle about its politics, but is not malicious either. Premiere has a clear symbol of a nice-but-mediocre white male at center (muttering “I’m important” throughout) being saved by a McGovern coalition of Others. White man’s burden —> White man *as* burden
Conversation
The symbolism of the second white male character, an older, fearful white male, about whom a key sympathetic+symbolic thing is revealed at end, is also effective.
Both WMs are portrayed sympathetically but not indulgently.
In all, show managed to thread the needle.
Replying to
upcoming actors in the preview at the end suggests a careful match with target markets.
