they get that lecter is an urbane villain, not any sorts of specfic idea-level things about taste. also that line is from "the silence of the lambs" movie not the book "hannibal."

Ah ok, I’ve only watched the movies. What’s the most interesting idea-level thing about taste in the books+movies? I too don’t get much beyond basic urbane taste. Maybe a sense of minimalist simplicity = more horrifying. Ingredients aside, his cooking style is very elemental.

you sniped me with that question, so i'll probably end up turning it into a blog post, ha. i don't know about "interesting" but i'd say it's main statement about taste is something like "the cause of and solution to all of [some people's] problems"
